Beryl Striewski is a Houston based commercial photographer that shoots corporate, advertising and editorial assignments. Environmental and studio portraits are her specialty as well as black and white, panorama and photo-illustration.
"I've always loved images. When I was young I used to impatiently wait for a new magazine to arrive in the mail so that I could pour through the photos. I would tear them out, save them, take them to school. I loved imagery. I set my family's vacation slides to music and would review and edit them ad nauseum, just to see the photos one more time. Despite my love of imagery, I didn't initially pursue photography while attending college at Michigan State University. I didn't even realize that there were opportunities for people that took pictures. I studied criminal justice and received my BA in Criminal Justice in l978 and moved immediately to Dallas to begin a career as a probation officer. About one year into this profession, I realized that I had made a terrible mistake and thus began my transition into photography. In l985, I graduated with a master's degree in art with a photography emphasis and moved to Houston to begin my apprenticeship with a commercial photographer. In l987, with the help of an NEAA grant, I started my own photography business. I've been in business ever since.
I'm happily married to a retired Houston Symphony musician and we live in the inner city of Houston in a home/studio that we designed ourselves. We have two dogs, one small and one large."
